BLMA plans events for National Museum Day

National Museum Day is Saturday, Sept. 24, and the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association will commemorate the day with the unveiling of the newly restored 1905 oil storage building.

The building was originally used to store oils and fuel for the lighthouse lamps and fuel for its fog signal compressors and standby generators. The building will officially open at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Beavertail site also includes 10 newly installed visitor interpretive historic signs on the site’s structures and outdoor features. The project was completed with a matching grant provided by the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities and the Gerard H. Smith Memorial Fund.

Visitors during National Museum Day will also have the opportunity to climb Beavertail’s granite light tower to the external catwalk and view the rocks and water. The tower will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
