JCT announces dates for ‘The Wizard of Oz’

The Jamestown Community Theatre has announced the November dates for its production of “The Wizard of Oz.” The November production coincides with the Jamestown Community Theatre’s 21st anniversary.

“JCT’s production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is sure to delight audiences young and old alike,” said JCT Director Mary S. Wright. “There is something for everyone: a beloved childhood tale, a villain, some lessons to learn, magic, and of course, a few surprises. The JCT cast will include island residents ages 7 to 83 – a family musical, yet the show will bring out the child in all of us.”

“The Wizard of Oz” was a 1902 musical play extravaganza based on the book, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” by L. Frank Baum, which was originally published in 1900.

Most fans remember the 1939 film, an American musical fantasy film produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer directed primarily by Victor Fleming.

Wright will direct the musical, and Annie McIntyre and Luigina Curran will be assistant directors. Laura Rossi Totten, Lisa Rafferty and Maia White will produce, and Rebecca Brazil will be musical director with Walter Sage’s assistance both vocally and on piano. Carol Hopkins will be choreographing most of the dances. Dori Hirsch will be costume director, and a team of artists, headed by Steve Farrelly and Greer Beecroft, will design the set.

Performances will be held on two consecutive weekends at the Jamestown Recreation Center: Friday, Nov. 11, and Saturday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 20, at 4 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased after Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Jamestown at Baker’s Pharmacy, Cathryn Jamieson Salon, Secret Garden and the Conanicut Marine Store. In Newport, tickets will be available at Pleasant Surprise, and in Wickford at Midnight Sun. Ticket prices for seniors (65 and over) and children (17 and under) will be $8 in advance; regular adult tickets will be $13.

Ticket prices will increase to $11 and $16, respectively, if purchased at the door. For more information, call 423-2121.
