Police should be more visible in town

My congratulations to Chief Mello. I wish him success in his new position. I do, however, hope for some changes in the department.

I have lived in Jamestown for about 40 years and remember when the police station was a couple of small rooms in the recreation center. I think they had one patrol car and the officers were very visible out in public.

Every night one officer would walk up and down Narragansett Avenue, checking the doors on every building that was closed. During the day officers were visible downtown on the streets. Since then our finest have become invisible and all we see are the patrol cars.

I hope that Chief Mello will make our “finest” more personally visible so we can get to know them.
