Former island author to discuss ‘Hessian’ novel
Walter Schroder, a former Jamestown resident, will discuss his novel, “The Hessian Drummer Boy of Newport,” on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. at Central Baptist Church. The forum is open to the public.
The book is a fictional retelling of Schroder’s earlier non-fiction book, “The Hessian Occupation of Newport and Rhode Island 1776- 1779.” He wrote the novel with middle-school students in mind.
The novel traces the journey of a 9-year-old German boy, Peter Bauer, who joins his father’s Hessian regiment as a drummer boy. It also chronicles the Bauer family’s journey to Newport in support of the British troops during the American Revolutionary War.
