AAA starts to sell E-ZPass transponders
AAA Southern New England now sells Rhode Island E-ZPass transponders at all of its Rhode Island branches. The transponder allows for the easy and convenient payment of the toll on the Newport Pell Bridge.
E-ZPass is an electronic tollcollection system used on most tolled roads, bridges and tunnels in the Northeast, south to Virginia and West Virginia, and west to Illinois. Currently, there are 25 agencies in 14 states that comprise the E-ZPass Interagency Group. All member agencies use the same technology, allowing travelers to use the same E-ZPass transponder throughout the network.
The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority administers the Rhode Island E-ZPass program, which was introduced in December 2008. The Newport Pell Bridge is the only tolled road or bridge in Rhode Island.
If purchasing the transponder at AAA, the price is $20.95. AAA members will receive a $2 credit. These interior-mount versions are available only to households (not businesses), must be mounted on vehicles under 7,000 pounds, and must be replenished by credit card. To qualify for the R.I. resident discount, motorists must show proof of R.I. residency.
Visit www.aaa.com for details about branch hours and membership.
For motorists who wish to pay by cash or check, E-ZPass transponders can be purchased at RITBA headquarters in Jamestown. The E-ZPass office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proof of R.I. residency is required whether the transponders are purchased in person or at ezpassritba.com.
