Teen development topic of discussion
The next lecturer at the Friends of Jamestown Youth’s monthly speaker series will be Glenn Miller on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. at the Lawn Avenue School. The presentation is geared towards parents and older youth. Childcare will be provided for younger children.
Miller will talk about developmental issues for both teenagers and parents. There are certain normal behaviors to expect from teenagers, but parents also go through their own issues during the same time period. Behaviors and attitudes from parents about alcohol and other drugs directly impact the risk of teen substance abuse. Family rules and family roles will be discussed.
Talking with teenagers is crucial during this time, and how to do it effectively will be explained. How to be involved, be observant and build trust will be covered, including what kinds of phrases and language help the relationships. The goal is to guide parents and teenagers through a difficult transition in life and come out on the other side safe, healthy and close.
Space is limited. To RSVP, contact Jill Goldstein at 423-7260.
