Stephen M. Cooper

Stephen M. Cooper, 65, of Jamestown, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Jan. 11, 2012.

He was the devoted husband of the late Carolyn L. (Ross) Cooper for 43 years.

Born in Newport, he was a son of the late Lewis F. and Edith M. (Bridge) Cooper.

He graduated from Rogers High School where he was a member of the 1963 state basketball championship team. After high school, he went on to receive degrees from URI and JWU.

He was a Vietnam veteran stationed in Korea as a first lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers.

Stephen worked as the chief of bureau of audits for the state of Rhode Island for 35 years before retiring. He was a founding member of the R.I. Chapter of Certified Fraud Examiners.

He was interested in genealogy and enjoyed traveling and sports. He was a communicant of St. Mark Church.

Stephen is survived by his children, Michele (Chris) Desrosiers, Jennifer Dale and Stephen R. (Abby) Cooper; and grandchildren, Mariah and Matthew Dale, Simone, Margot and Ross Cooper, and Emily and Thomas Desrosiers; two brothers, Ron (Susanne) Cooper and Peter Cooper (Patti Millet); as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the American Heart Association.
