Multiple charges

• Melanie E. Hawkins, 25, of Lawton Avenue, North Kingstown, was charged Jan. 20 with first-offense possession of marijuana and a bench-warrant violation from 4th District Court in Wakefield. According to police, an officer observed Hawkins in the Bank of America parking lot on Narragansett Avenue and knew about the outstanding warrant. The defendant was held at the police station and transported to 2nd Division District Court in Newport for arraignment.

• Thomas Phillips, 21, of Sachem Road, North Kingstown, was charged Jan. 20 with driving on a suspended license and obstructing an officer in execution of duty. According to police, an officer stopped a vehicle on North Road for erratic operation and allegedly witnessed the operator and passenger switch seats to avoid arrest for driving on a suspended license. Phillips is charged with obstruction for lying to the officer about driving. The defendant was held at the police station and arraigned by a justice of the peace. A re-arraignment was scheduled for Jan. 20 at 2nd Division District Court in Newport.

Possession of marijuana

Renato Avelino, 19, of 41st St., Long Island, N.Y., was charged Jan. 16 for first-offense possession of marijuana. According to police, an officer allegedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana following a routine traffic stop on Route 138. Avelino was held at the police station and arraigned by a justice of the peace. A re-arraignment was scheduled for Jan. 20 at 2nd Division District Court in Newport.
