Clarification on the police, harbor patrol
Following last week’s editorial on police joining the harbormaster on patrol, Lt. Angela Deneault emailed to point out that it would not be a full-time measure.
“The funding approved at the meeting, $2,000, will cover just 10 four-hour patrols from now until July 1. The additional funds requested (and tabled) would extend the program for the upcoming season after July 1. So, once boating weather arrives, we are looking at one four-hour patrol a week. Considering the town has harbormaster coverage for 56 hours per week, we feel having a police officer accompany him for four of those hours is quite minimal, but enough to show our presence and connect with this significant part of the Jamestown community,” she wrote.
Police on harbormaster patrol for special events – fireworks, America’s Cup and Tall Ships – is a good idea. Any more is questionable in these days of tight budgets.
