Assistant harbormaster better idea than police

Upon returning to Rhode Island after three months in Florida and catching up on back issues of the Jamestown Press, what was the town thinking when it authorized $2,000 to have a police officer accompany the harbormaster?

I have been a sailor for 35 years and have done extensive sailing up and down the East Coast visiting hundreds of harbors. Never have I seen a police officer on board.

If we have extra money to spend, it makes more sense to have an assistant harbormaster and if possible, patrol both sides of the island. Hiring an assistant is much cheaper and perhaps better as he will be more familiar with the shoreline and currents.

Please do no spend another $10,000 on something that is unnecessary.
