Donations needed to upgrade play area

Now that spring is here, thoughts for many of us turn to going outside for recreational activities. In fairly short time, recreational activities for Jamestown’s middle school kids will include the climbing boulders play area to be installed behind the Lawn Avenue School.

The kidsROCK project, part of an overall outdoor fitness area (fit- Zone) envisioned for the campus of the Jamestown schools, just received a $38,000 matching grant a from the state Department of Environmental Management to help fund the purchase and installation of the climbing boulders play area. The play area plan consists of several monolithic boulder structures and connecting ropes, which safely promotes play and development of climbing skills in middle school-age children.

Fundraising to date has included donations from the Frederick H. Prince Memorial Fund, the Laurie Foundation, the Leigha Carlisle Memorial Scholarship Fund, the Prospect Hill Foundation, Jamestown PTO, Jamestown Women’s Club, the Lawn School Student Council and several other private donations. A fantastic fundraiser was held by the kidsROCK fundraising committee and hosted by the Laurie family at Dragonline, netting over $9,300 for the project’s coffers.

The project budget is $76,000, with the intention of raising half that amount through local fundraising efforts. Thus far, nearly $31,000 has been raised for the project in cash and in-kind donation of services, so we only need to raise about $7,000 to reach full value of the matching grant. The project continues to seek donations from any and all members of the Jamestown community. Families with children at the two schools are especially urged to contribute as they will be the happy benefi- ciaries of this brand new play area slated for summer 2012 construction.

Donations are tax deductible and anyone who wishes to contribute can send a check to me at 25 West Passage Drive, Jamestown, RI 02835. Make checks out to “Town of Jamestown – kidsROCK project.”

If anyone has any questions on the project design or fundraising, please call me at 423-3353. Any contributions to this wonderful project are greatly appreciated.
