Francis R. Costa Jr.
Born in Dighton, Mass., he was a son of the late Frank and Rose (Souza) Costa.
Mr. Costa graduated from Somerset High School in 1942. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Costa served in World War II. He landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, on Aug. 6, 1944, where he was wounded during combat and was awarded the Purple Heart.
When he returned home, he served two terms as a state senator, served as chairman of the Rhode Island Democratic Party, and was the former president of the Jamestown Town Council.
He and his late wife Lily owned and operated the Jamestown Country Club for more than 40 years before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He was a communicant of St. Mark Church.
He leaves a daughter, Cynthia Wolfe of Jamestown; a brother, James R. Costa and wife Jacqueline of Somerset, Mass.; a sisterin law, Barbara Costa of Somerset, Mass.; three grandchildren, Richard, Daniel and Tiffany Wolfe; and a great-granddaughter, Scarlet Rose Wolfe. He was the father of the late Richard D. and Mark J. Costa, and brother of the late Edward R. Costa, Hilda Souza, Doris Correira and Pearl Sanchez.
His funeral will be held Saturday, April 21, at 8:45 a.m. at the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home on Boston Neck Road in North Kingstown. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Church. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mark Cemetery. Visiting hours are Friday, April 20, from 4 to 7 p.m.
