Opening reception for islander’s exhibit

The opening reception for “Myth and Metamorphosis,” an exhibit that will feature island artist Jillian Barber, will take place on Saturday, May 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the DeBlois Gallery on Bellevue Avenue in Newport. The exhibit will be on display through May 27.

Barber is an award-winning ceramic sculptor who graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is well known throughout the state for her fantasy masks sculpted from individual portrait castings, and her imaginative, expressive, mythical animals, including “Cat Bird” (above).

“The key elements in my sculptural work in clay are portraiture and animal imagery,” she said. “My ever-evolving work in clay combines a deep love of nature with the realm of imagination and the realms of archetype, dreams and myth.”

The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, call 847-9977.
