Postal workers will collect food Saturday
On Saturday, May 12, the National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. To participate, collect and bag non-perishable food items and place the bag by a mailbox for pick up.
This is the 20th year that the association will sponsor the event. It is the country’s largest one-day food drive, and more than 1 billion pounds of food has been collected over the years, including 70.2 million pounds last year. More than 1,300 branches participated nationwide.
Examples of non-perishable items include canned soup and vegetables, pasta, rice, cereal and juice. All food collected in Jamestown will stay on the island – St. Mark Church will receive the donations. Last year island postal workers collected 1,900 pounds.
