Robert Strang, 80, of Jamestown, died peacefully on June 2, 2012, after a long illness.
Born Feb. 29, 1932, in Fort William, Ontario, Bob was an original in an age of imitations. After jobs as a grain elevator operator, butcher, garbage man, disc jockey, minor league catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals farm team, stock car driver, and writer, Bob found his calling as an elementary school teacher at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where he taught for 35 years.
Bob loved Jamestown for more than 40 years, first as a summer visitor to Hull Cove, then choosing to make it his permanent home in 2007. He is survived by Dorothy, his spouse of 49 years, and his daughters Hilary and Susannah.
A memorial service will be held later in the summer. To honor Bob’s lifelong love of animals, donations in his name may be made to the Potter League for Animals, 87 Oliphant Lane, Middletown, RI 02842.
