kidsROCK project to become a reality

And now, some great news for Jamestown: The kidsROCK project will soon become a reality, as the Town Council awarded the contract last week for the climbing-boulders play area to be constructed behind the Lawn Avenue School.

The kidsROCK committee would like to thank the entire Jamestown community for its continued support, knowing that kids will appreciate the effort for many years to come. For those not familiar with the project, the play area consists of several monolithic boulder structures and connecting ropes, which safely promote play and development of climbing skills in middle-school-age children. Construction is expected to be completed this summer in time for the start of the next school year. We are happy to report that we raised sufficient funds to select the bid alternate, which added a fourth rock-climbing structure to the original design. kidsROCK has had many benefactors to support the cost of the project including a $5,000 donation recently received from the Jamestown Education Foundation. The JEF donation was not only generous but also timely, as it allowed us to close the funding gap and put the project out to bid in time for summer completion. Funds raised for this project are matched by a $38,000 grant from the state Department of Environmental Management, which was awarded in April.

Our fundraising work is not quite over, as the project continues to seek donations to help cover the cost of signage for the play area and to start a wood-chip account for the School Department’s future use when the woodchip play surface needs replenishment.

Families with children at Melrose and Lawn avenue schools are especially urged to contribute since these students will be the happy beneficiaries of this brand new play area which has taken many years to wind through its planning, approval and fundraising phases. Donations are tax deductible and anyone who wishes to contribute can send a check made out to the “Town of Jamestown, kidsROCK project,” to 25 West Passage Drive, Jamestown, RI 02835.

If anyone has any questions on the project design or fundraising, please call me at 423-3353. Any contributions to this wonderful project are greatly appreciated and thanks again to all for the support.
