Auditions next month for upcoming musical
The Jamestown Community Theatre will hold auditions for its upcoming November musical titled “Once Upon a Mattress” on Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Jamestown Recreation Center.
“Once Upon a Mattress” is a musical comedy with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer. It opened off Broadway in May 1959 and then moved to Broadway later.
This raucous retelling of the familiar fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea” by Hans Christian Andersen features the overbearing Queen Aggravain, who has previously ruled that no one in the kingdom may marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, marries. With help from her Wizard, she manages to successfully sabotage all of the princesses’ efforts to pass the queen’s diabolical trials. When Sir Harry and Lady Larken learn that they are going to be parents, Sir Harry goes off to the swamps and brings back Princess Winnifred. Naturally, the queen finds the unrefined princess unsuitable and sets out to subvert her bid for the prince’s hand. But Winnifred, with some help from Sir Harry, the king and the jester, isn’t going to be quite so easy to get rid of.
Rehearsals will begin in early September and will be held two to three times each week. Performances will be held on the second and third weekend of November.
On Aug. 19 at 3 p.m. there will be a mandatory meeting for parents of minors who plan to be in the play, even if the child has already been in a JCT production. Auditions for children ages 7-12 will begin at 3:30 p.m. They must recite a memorized poem or monologue 10 to 12 lines long. Auditions for teens and adults begin at 4 p.m. They must be prepared to read from a script.
Those who would like to sing in the play should prepare a song of their choice. All singers must bring sheet music for the accompanist. For more information, call Julie Andrews at 560-0474.
