Presentation on ferries to follow JHS meeting
The Jamestown Historical Society will hold its annual meeting on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Jamestown Philomenian Library. Following the business meeting and the election of officers, guest speaker Archie Clarke will hold a presentation titled, “Jamestown Steam Ferries: 1873-1969.” The program is free and open to the public.
In colonial and early national days, sail ferries brought people and goods to and from the island. Service of steam ferries began on the East Passage in April 1873, and on the West Passage in 1888. The ferry era ended with the completion of the bridges: the Jamestown Bridge was completed in August 1940, the Newport Bridge in June 1969.
Clarke was born in Jamestown and rode the ferry throughout his childhood. He has been collecting information, photographs and memorabilia of the ferry system ever since.
