Sign-language courses will be held at library

A free 10-week sign-language class taught by Gemma Guinguing will be held on Thursdays from Sept. 6 to Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Jamestown Philomenian Library.

Guinguing, who was named Miss Deaf Rhode Island in 2005, was born in the Philippines. She is a strong advocate for the hearing impaired and voluntarily assists community organizations in how to assist and communicate with deaf people, including firefighters, community groups and police agencies.

The program is free and open to anyone 14 and older. Class size is limited. Registration begins Friday, Aug. 17, by calling 423-7280.
