Jamestown Day planned for Sept. 15 at pavilion

Jamestown Day will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Fort Getty pavilion. Music and games from 5 to 8 p.m. will be followed by a bonfire. The rain date is Saturday, Sept. 22.

Jamestown Day is an alcoholand drug-free fundraising event sponsored by the Friends of Jamestown Youth. Money raised will be used for teen-targeted programs that encourage healthy communication and lifestyle choices. The event will feature fun-filled activities and entertainment for the whole family, including volleyball, a dunk tank and a bouncy house. Volunteers from the Jamestown Arts Center will paint faces.

Other games include donut on a string (“One way to eat your dessert while practicing mouth and eye coordination, although a bit messy,” says Arlene Petit, president of the Friends of Jamestown Youth), the potato-sack race, and the cakewalk, where the winners take home a cake of their choice.

Dr. Leon Goldstein will sponsor the Conanicut Cup Race this year, an event where Jamestown teens race mini-sailboats that they constructed. The course will be marked and the sailboats will be set afloat. Numbered sailboats can be bought in advance at the recreation center for $5 each. Cash prizes will be given to those who have the number of the winning sailboats.

Entertainment will be provided by the Jamestown Community band and chorus. Food and beverages will be sold under the pavilion provided by Freddie’s House of Pizza. Admission is $5, free for children under 6. For more information, call Petit (423-7496) or Molly Conlon (423-7261).
