Jeanne Katherine Barbaresi Bunkley
Jeanne Katherine Barbaresi Bunkley died Sept. 5, 2012, in Newport. She was a longtime resident of Jamestown, where she originated and for many years directed its famous Christmas pageant. She formerly lived in New York City, Bronxville, N.Y., Mallorca, Spain, and Rome, Italy.
The daughter of Katherine Barter and Alfred Barbaresi, she was born in New York in 1918. She attended St. Joseph’s School in Bronxville and the Art Students League in New York. Jeanne was a well-known portrait and landscape painter with numerous solo shows in Providence and other cities.
She was previously married to Lt. Raymond Frese, who was killed in World War II. Jeanne was the widow of Rear Adm. Joel W. Bunkley of Jamestown. Her son Brit Bunkley, his wife Andrea Gardner, and a grandson, Noah Bunkley, all of Wanganui, New Zealand, and a sister, Sara Furth, survive her.
Jeanne will be buried with Adm. Bunkley in Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Potter League for Animals, P.O. Box 412, Newport, RI 02840, or the Jamestown Fire Department, 50 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, RI 02835.
