Archaeological dig will be discussed at library
Dr. William Simmons will discuss the Native American artifacts found during a 1967 archaeological dig of an Indian burial ground in Jamestown. The discussion will take place at the Jamestown Philomenian Library on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 11 a.m. Seven cremation burials and 58 Narragansett graves were uncovered in the dig. A portion of the artifacts is housed in the Sidney Wright Museum located in the library.
Simmons is the author of “Cautanowwit’s House: An Indian Burial Ground on the Island of Conanicut in Narragansett Bay.” He currently sits on the boards of the Providence Public Library, the Rhode Island Historical Society, and the Providence Branch of the NAACP.
