Member needed for livestock welfare council

The state Department of Environmental Management is seeking nominations for membership on the newly created Rhode Island Livestock Welfare and Care Standards Advisory Council.

The council was established by statute in 2012 to serve as an advisory body to the director of DEM and the General Assembly in making recommendations related to the overall health and welfare of livestock species.

Chaired by the state veterinarian, the council is made up of representatives from the Rhode Island Farm Bureau, the Rhode Island Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a professor from URI’s College of Environment and Life Sciences, and three citizen members including a livestock farmer, a representative from a nonprofit animal welfare entity, and a representative from a national nonprofit animal welfare entity.

Nominations should be forwarded to state veterinarian Scott Marshall no later than Friday, November 30. Nominations can be submitted to scott.marshall@dem. ri.gov. For more information, call Marshall at 222-2781, ext. 4503.
