Joseph F. “Pete” Murphy
“Pete” Murphy, age 88, of Appleton, Wis., passed away at Appleton Medical Center Nov. 19, 2012. Pete was born on June 11, 1924, in Middletown, to the late Joseph F. and Marie (Vanicek) Murphy. He married Katherine “Katy” Smith on Oct. 8, 1949, in Jamestown.
Pete proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, participating in five invasions in the South Pacific. In June of 2011 he was honored for his military service through the Old Glory Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. It was Pete’s love of the ocean and beaches that led him to his service in the Navy. He was a member of American Legion Burns Post No. 38.
Pete was employed at Electro- Motive, a division of General Motors, for more than three decades, retiring in 1987. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Katy; his children, Nancy (Bill) Guilbeault, Appleton; Joseph Murphy, Amelia Island, Fla.; and Elizabeth (James) Carder, Yorba Linda, Calif.; his grandchildren, Brian (Cassie) Guilbeault, Dan Guilbeault, Beth (Bill) Hanna, Mary Guilbeault, Lauren Murphy (fiancé Lucas), Matthew Murphy, Colette Murphy, Graham Murphy, Margaret Fulghum, Katherine Fulghum (fiancé Travis), Jake Fulghum, Meghan Carder, Jessica Carder and Courtney Carder; and his three great-grandsons, Will, Howie and Gus Guilbeault. Pete is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Brigid, and his sisters, Margaret Mattila and Barbara Culley.
A memorial has been established in his name. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at the Cardiac Unit of AMC.
