Volunteers needed for Saturday’s bird count
The 30th annual Conanicut Island Christmas Bird Count will take place Saturday, Jan. 5, beginning at 7 a.m. at the police station. Participants will be divided into four groups, with each group studying a separate part of the island: the farms, the north end, Beavertail and the village. All birds observed will be counted and the results included in statewide records. Birders should dress warm and bring binoculars, field guides and sturdy shoes. The group will meet back at the police station at noon to tally results. Last year’s total number of species spotted was 74. The record high is 76. Participants are also invited to report birds seen at their home by calling Candy Powell at 423-1492.
