Old school toys are awesome. Santa brought very few batteries to our house this year. The kids loved Battleship, Lincoln Logs, puzzles, Legos and crayons.

The Jamestown 1st Day Plunge looked to go off without a hitch. According to Bob Bailey, there were about 200 swimmers and more than 500 spectators. The paddleboard race was won by Brian Welsh of Jamestown. Second place went to Tom Reilly of Warwick and third place went to islander Ron DiMauro.

Tons of cool classes will start up later this month at the Jamestown Arts Center.

Kids are back to school. Phew.

It is not a year in review, but since there is not much going on this week, here is a recap of a few things coming up. *** Jamestown School’s eighthgraders will be your waiters and waitresses at their pasta dinner this Saturday, Jan. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Melrose Avenue School. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 10. They are available at the Melrose or Lawn school front offices, or from your eighth-grade neighbor. There will also be a silent auction and raffle. All proceeds will be put towards the class trip to Washington, D.C.

It’s Girl Scout cookie time! Yes, more cookies. Your local Brownies and Girls Scouts will sell their infamous thin mints among others through Wednesday, Jan. 9. Don’t be afraid – the cookies won’t be in for a while.

Calling all future actors and actresses, ages 8 to 12. Mary Wright and Annie McIntyre from the Jamestown Community Theatre will teach a scene-study class at the Jamestown Arts Center on Sunday afternoons starting Jan. 27. Kids will be able to perform the scenes they have been working on in the class in a final performance. There are still a few spots left so sign up at the Jamestown Arts Center.
