Wickford train station offers free parking

Gov. Lincoln Chafee announced Tuesday that parking at the commuter rail garage at Wickford Junction Station in North Kingstown will be free for the reminder of the winter.

Commuters taking advantage of the free parking will receive validated tickets allowing them to exit the parking garages at no charge through March 29. The fare from Wickford to Providence is $3.25 each way; the one-way fare to Boston’s

South Station is $11. The full schedule is available at DOT.ri.gov.

The commuter rail features 20 stops per day at Wickford Junction on the weekdays. Normally, parking costs $4 daily. The station features heated waiting areas close to the train platforms, as well as an in-station coffee and snack shop. The trains also offer free wireless Internet service.

Free train fare from Wickford to Providence is being offered on the next two Wednesdays, Feb. 20 and Feb. 27. “As we have seen over the past couple of days, travel conditions and parking in Providence have been anything but normal because of the blizzard,” said Chafee.
