Celebrate March 7 at Portsmouth Town Hall
A ceremony will be held at the Portsmouth Town Hall on Thursday, March 7, to commemorate the 375th anniversary of an agreement to create a civil body that eventually became Portsmouth.
On March 7, 1638, Anne Hutchinson, with the help of Roger Williams, gathered with her followers in Boston and helped finalize an agreement, based on Christian principles, to create a “civil bodie politick.” The compact was signed by 23 men and William Coddington was elected leader. The compact became the basis of their government.
Portsmouth historian Jim Garman will discuss the event at the ceremony. For more information, call Barbara Ripa at 683-3255.
