Skippers basketball advances to Final Four

The North Kingstown High School boys’ basketball team advanced to the Final Four of the Rhode Island Open State Tournament after rolling over Barrington Sunday, 62-41. The Skippers will play Hope in the semifinals Friday, March 8, at the Ryan Center at 6 p.m. for a chance to play for the state title.

Before the Barrington game, North Kingstown survived a scare on Feb. 28 in the first round of the 16-team tournament. The third-seeded Skippers needed a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Justin Pratt to give them a 68-67 win over No. 14 seed Cranston West. North Kingstown’s Matt Quianoo scored a game-high 24 points, and Jamestown’s Owen Heath added 15 points in the win.

Against Barrington, the Skippers looked more dominant, even without guard Austin Barry, who left the Cranston game with a sprained ankle. With Barry out, Grant Gillis, a 6-foot-7 center from Jamestown, was the first man off the bench and made the most of the opportunity. Gillis had his best game of the season, scoring eight points, grabbing five rebounds and blocking three shots. Quianoo and Heath each scored a game-high 16 points in the blowout.
