SSV Hazard Perry still needs donations

We appreciate so much your ongoing support for Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island in its building of Rhode Island’s official sailing education vessel, SSV Oliver Hazard Perry. It is by the power of your word that we have so many supporters from Jamestown and surrounding areas.

As proof of that, we have had several calls of congratulations from Jamestown Press readers who read your latest article (“Oliver Hazard Perry exceeds fundraising goals,” Feb. 28). They mistakenly thought OHPRI had indeed met its complete fundraising goals, when in fact we still have a way to go. It might have been the headline, which is indeed accurate, but did not include the qualifier “year end.” Our year-end fundraising goals were exceeded with donors answering the call of two different matching grants that had deadlines of Dec. 31.

In summary, the complete truth is this: OHPRI has raised $6.5 million in donations. However, more than $2.5 million in funds must still be raised in order to complete the ship and begin its first year of operations in 2014.

Again, we love the power of your word, and we hope that your readers will stay with the ship. For more information or to extend a donation, contact Jessica Wurzbacher OHPRI director of operations, at 841-0080. Thank you.

Vice president
