Governor, legislature sponsor veterans bills
Gov. Lincoln Chafee joined members of the Senate and House of Representatives last week to announce their sponsorship and support for legislation designed to improve benefits and services for Rhode Island veterans and their families.
All nine bills have now been introduced in both chambers. The bills are designed to assist with the reintegration of veterans back into society through increased access to benefits, state purchasing preferences for veteran-owned businesses, increased access to educational opportunities, and streamlined availability of essential medical benefits. Legislation will also make it military-status discrimination as an unfair housing practice, will give veterans preference on state contracts, and will set time frames for termination of leases for active-duty members.
“With so many Rhode Islanders returning home from foreign deployments, we must do all we can to support our military men and women, both during and after their service,” said Chafee.
