May breakfast tradition on hold
This week we learned that the Jamestown Rotary Club will not host its annual May breakfast.
Bleak news, indeed. For nearly five decades members of the island civic organization have taken up spatulas and manned the hot griddles to serve a hearty New England fare – all in the effort to raise money for the club’s charitable works.
A club spokesman said that finances were the primary reason. The cost of staging the annual May enterprise would outweigh the returns this year. For that reason, the club is not inviting the community to its Saturday morning breakfast event.
There is a glimmer of hope that the May breakfast might return next year. We would like to see this important tradition continue, as it has become a part of our island fabric.
