Documentary next week highlights K-9s

The Jamestown Arts Center will present a work-in-progress screening of Mary Healey Jamiel’s documentary “Reliance” on Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. The film follows Rhode Island State Police Sgt. Matthew Zarrella as he rehabilitates pound dogs and turns them into search-and-rescue K-9s.

A documentary filmmaker and professor, Jamiel draws from Zarrella’s video diaries, animation and interviews. She also studied extensive footage that chronicled searches and followed a class of trainees from their initial pairings to certification. “Reliance” documents how search-and-rescue teams can mean life or death for a missing victim, and also provided answers for decades-old tragedies.

Cost is $5. Admission is free for members of the Jamestown Fire Department.
