Diseased parakeets sold to Critter Hut in North Kingstown

The state Department of Environmental Management confirmed the presence of a disease known as psittacosis in a privately owned flock of psittacine birds in Pawtucket. The Psittacine family includes parrots and similar birds such as parakeets and cockatiels. Birds from the infectious flock were sold to Critter Hut Aquarium and Pets in North Kingstown. State officials are concerned people in the area may have purchased exposed birds. Because psittacosis is a bacterial infection that can affect humans, anyone who purchased a bird from Critter Hut should contact their veterinarian.
