Local businessman honored by Nobel laureates
Islander Dean Cycon, CEO and founder of Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee, was recognized May 14 as an honoree of an Oslo Business for Peace Award. The honor goes to Cycon for “outstanding achievements creating shared value between business and society.”
Cycon was one of five honorees out of 80 candidates to be nominated. Nominees came from 50 countries, and Cycon was the only American to receive the honor. The committee taxed with choosing the recipients is made up of Nobel laureates.
The ceremony took place in Oslo City Hall, the same location where the Nobel Peace Price is awarded.
The honor comes just weeks after Cycon was presented with a United Nations Women’s Empowerment Principles leadership award for community engagement and gender equity.
Dean’s Beans was created 20 years ago to model how businesses could be a force for positive social change in coffee-growing communities, and still be profitable.
