RITBA offering free E-ZPass transponders

The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority will discount the cost of its E-ZPass transponders from $20.95 to $10 for a limited time. The authority will also add a $10 credit to the new account.

The new E-ZPass accounts will begin with a $35 balance – a minimum of $25 must be deposited with the purchase of a transponder. Drivers do not have to be R.I. residents to purchase the transponder.

E-ZPass is a system used for electronic toll collections in the Northeast, as far south as Virginia and as far west as Illinois. There are currently 25 agencies in 15 states that use E-ZPass. All agencies use the same technology, allowing travelers to use the same E-ZPass transponder throughout the network.

The bridge authority has selected the least costly tolling system available: Antennas mounted on an overhead gantry that read transponders as vehicles pass under at highway speed. For vehicles without an E-ZPass transponder, cameras mounted on the gantry take photos of license plates and invoice the owners of the vehicles.

Visit RITBA.org or call 877- 743-9727 for location details on where discounted transponders are being sold.
