Auditions for ‘Dear Edwina’ at arts center
Auditions for the Jamestown Community Theatre’s production of “Dear Edwina” will be held on July 28 at the Jamestown Arts Center.
There are roles for adults, teens and children over 7 years old. No experience is necessary. Those interested in joining the chorus should arrive at 6 p.m. Anyone 16 years and younger who wants to join the chorus must memorize and recite a monologue or poem no more than 15 lines. Those older than 16 have no preparation to join the chorus. A mandatory meeting will follow at 6:45 p.m. for all interested crew members, actors, singers and dancers. Anyone 18 or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Auditions will take place at 7 p.m. Candidates must prepare a one- to two-minute song to sing or dance to. Each person is responsible for bringing their own sheet music if they plan on having piano accompaniment. Auditions are open to anyone who lives or works in Jamestown. No experience is necessary. Those with and without experience are encouraged to try out.
The operetta-style musical the JCT will perform is the full, unedited version that was played off Broadway, with music by Zina Goldrich and lyrics by Marcy Heisler. Performances will be held the third and fourth weekend in November. Rehearsals start in September and will be held on Sunday afternoons, Tuesday nights and some Wednesday evenings. At 1 hour, 15 minutes long, “Dear Edwina” is shorter than previous JCT productions, so rehearsals will generally be shorter than they have in the past.
A callback audition will be held on Sept. 8. Anyone who is unavailable for the July audition who would like to be part of the musical should call Mary Wright at 741-9818 by July 5. Those interested in becoming a crew member should call Wright ASAP.
Co-directors Wright and Annie McIntyre will be joined by musical directors Matt Bolles and Walter Sage. Everyone who wants to be involved with the musical as cast or crew must be a member of the theater. There will be an opportunity to join at the July audition. Annual cost is $25 for an individual or $40 per family. Financial assistance is available by calling Jill Goldstein at the Recreation Department.
“Dear Edwina” was nominated for outstanding music and outstanding lyrics at the 2009 Drama Desk Awards.
