It will be a busy Saturday morning on the island, especially at Potters Cove. The 37th annual Save the Bay Swim will start and finish at the cove with hundreds of swimmers, kayakers, volunteers and family members making a day of it. Earlier this year Naval Station Newport was informed by the U.S. Department of Defense that it would not be able to host the start of the swim. For the first time, instead of crossing the bay, there will be a 1.7-mile triangular course with the start and finish at Potters Cove.

Even with all the chaos, it will really be a sight to see since it’s the first time the swim starts in Jamestown. Check it out if you have the means to get there: bike. No parking on East Shore Road.

Spotted: Portuguese man-o’- wars at Second Beach.

Marilyn’s latest foster pup is 2-year-old Eugene, a handsome 35-pound shepherd mix who was a stray at one time. He needs to go to a home with another dog to help him out – he is a bit afraid of people. As required of all the island dogs, he loves to go for walks. Stop by Conanicut Marine for more information on this guy.

Favorite cooling center: Mackerel Cove.

Attention Jamestown residents and those who work on the island: Auditions for the community theater’s fall production will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 28, at the Jamestown Arts Center at 18 Valley St. There are roles in “Dear Edwina” for adults, teens and children over 7.

For youngsters who want to be in the musical, all children 17 and under must be accompanied by one of their own parents or guardians. Paperwork has to be filled out and parents have to be at the meeting and wait during their child’s audition. Please bring sheet music unless you plan to sing a cappella or dance without piano accompaniment. Remember, no experience necessary. For more information, call Mary Wright at 741-9818 or e-mail her at ms.wright@cox.net. Check out next week’s press for more details.
