Robert S.L. Kinder, M.D.

Robert S.L. Kinder, M.D., 84, of Jamestown, passed away July 28, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Betty R. (Yeager) Kinder.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Ralph F. Kinder and Marion (Miller) Sime, he grew up in Bristol.

He graduated from Moses Brown, Brown University and George Washington University, where he earned his doctor of medicine with distinction.

He completed his residency and fellowship in ophthalmology at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary.

Dr. Kinder served as an executive officer and navigator on the USS LST 532, United States Navy.

His past appointments include clinical professor of ophthalmology at Brown University; surgeonin chief, Department of Ophthalmology, Rhode Island Hospital; governor’s advisory for the blind; Health Services Council for the state of Rhode Island; president of the medical staff at Rhode Island Hospital; and numerous additional academic, hospital and professional appointments.

He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American College of Surgeons, Conanicut Yacht Club, Cottrell’s Pier, and was a former member of the Jamestown Conservation Commission and the Fools’ Rules Regatta.

He enjoyed model railroading, ship modeling, furniture building, flower arranging, crossword puzzles (always in ink), tennis, sports cars, snorkeling, reading, and magic, which he started at the age of 15. In the early 1960s, he played the piano at Durgin Park in Boston.

He loved the Bristol Fourth of July parade, Tuesday lunch group, coffee ice cream, fudge, Meghan’s chocolate chip cookies, traveling, Wild Turkey and rum punch, longtime close friends, but most of all, his wife Betty.

Since 1968 he volunteered yearly providing eye care to the St. Lucia community at St. Jude Hospital, West Indies. The clinic at the hospital was named Robert S.L. Kinder Eye Clinic. In 2008, Dr. Kinder received the St. Lucia Metal of Merit (gold), the only non-St. Lucian to receive the medal.

He was the father of Robert, Chris and the late Jeffrey Kinder; stepfather of Richard, Scott (Susan), Jason (Rayanne) and Jennifer Coombs; brother of Joseph G. Kinder; grandfather and stepgrandfather of Meghan Konopka, Abigail and Sarah Kinder, Pierce, Noah, Georgia and Alden Coombs.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, at the Conanicut Yacht Club, 40 Bay View Drive, Jamestown, from 3 to 7 p.m., with the family receiving line from 3 to 4 p.m.
