Man dies Friday in motorcycle wreck

An off-duty police officer who grew up in Jamestown was killed Friday when he crashed his motorcycle into a car on North Road.

The victim, John Reposa Jr., 43, of Narragansett, was pronounced dead at the scene. The sole occupant of the car, Marijke Landon, 44, of North Carolina, was uninjured. No charges are expected to be filed against Landon, police said.

The accident occurred in the northbound lane of North Road at the Westwind Drive intersection.

Rhode Island State Police are the lead investigators in the fatality because an accident reconstruction was required. According to Police Chief Ed Mello, Patrolman Ron Jacobsen is the only officer on the Jamestown force qualified for the task, but he was unavailable.

Mello said the matter is still under investigation, and he doesn’t expect a preliminary report for another week or two. He said a toxicology report is also still in the works.

Reposa was a member of the Providence Police Department for 20 years. He was born in Providence, but grew up in Jamestown. He attended Jamestown’s public schools. His parents and sister live on the island.

A funeral will be held on Friday at noon at St. Mark’s. Part of Narragansett Avenue from Coronado to North Road will be closed for the service. Howland Avenue will also be closed.
