Classic Yacht Regatta at IYRS Labor Day weekend
The International Yacht Restoration School in Newport will host the 34th annual Classic Yacht Regatta from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. The regatta is part of the North American Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, which also includes the Nantucket Opera Cup Regatta in Nantucket, Mass., and the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta in Marblehead, Mass. The regatta attracts classic yachts with proven pedigrees.
On Saturday, Aug. 31, the community is invited to join Classic Yacht Regatta sponsors Panerai and Hunt Yachts at Fort Adams from 6 to 8 p.m. for a cocktail party featuring the vintage country and rockabilly sounds of the Honky
Tonk Knights. There will be a cash bar and light appetizers.
The parade kicks off at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1, from the harbor entrance. On moving display around the harbor is a beautiful of more than 50 classic yachts, both sail and power, which represent the best of classic yacht design and construction. There are many vantage points to view this procession of yachts, including the Goat Island Marina dock, Bowen’s Wharf, Bannister’s Wharf, the Newport Yachting Center dock, King’s Park Pier, Alofsin Piers, and the Sail Newport waterfront center at Fort Adams.
The parade yachts will vie for best sailboat, best powerboat, most patriotic and best costumes. Anyone with a classic boat is invited to join the free parade. Call Melissa Flaherty at 848-5777, ext. 209 to register.
There will also be a raffle, featuring a Herreshoff Frostbite Dinghy. The dinghy was constructed by students in the advanced IYRS School of Boatbuilding & Restoration program and is on display in the gallery at 449 Thames Street. Raffle tickets are $50 each, three for $100, or seven for $200, and are available at the IYRS or by calling Flaherty. Raffle tickets will also be available at the cocktail party. Drawing will be held on Sept. 1
