Kathryn M. (Spry) Zweir
Born in Westerly, she was a daughter of the late Francis N. and Margaret (Murphy) Spry.
Mrs. Zweir graduated from Rogers High School in 1943. She was a home-crafting teacher at the Swinburne School in Newport. She also worked for the Providence Gas Company and was its “girl in white.” She was Mrs. Rhode Island in 1958.
Mrs. Zweir was a postal carrier and clerk for the Jamestown post office for many years, retiring in 1985.
She owned a small business, the Welcome Border, which focused on interior design. She was proud to be a finalist in the Pillsbury Bake-Off in 1970. A communicant of St. Mark Church, she was a member of the bazaar committee.
Besides her husband, she leaves five children, Mildred M. Zweir and her husband Rich Rosen of Amherst, Mass., Stephen J. Zweir III of Lebanon, Conn., Michael P. Zweir and his wife Sara Nakata of Oakland, Calif., Kathryn M. Zweir and her partner Susan Crowell of Holyoke, Mass., and Annmary Zweir of West Greenwich; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Francis X. Zweir; and sister of the late Frances Hennigan, Eleanor Dahl and Mildred Spry.
Visitation was held in the Fagan- Quinn Funeral Home, and a Mass of Christian burial took place at St. Mark Church. Burial followed in St. Mark Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Church.
