78 boats circle Conanicut Island

Despite the constant threat of rain, 78 boats lined up Sunday to sail in Conanicut Yacht Club’s 86th annual Around the Island Race. Fortunately for the captains and their crews, the day stayed relatively dry.

“At the start we skirted two squall lines, one to the south and one to north,” said race organizer John Mayers, “but the waters off Conanicut Island were free from the thunderstorms.”

Mayers said the wind was steadily between 8 and 12 knots for the entire race, despite being light as the boats left the docks. The initial starting gun went off just after 11 a.m. and the first boat crossed the finish line at 2:15 p.m. The last racer finished just before 4 p.m.

The Commodore Bruce R. Brakenhoff Trophy, awarded to the boat that finishes in the shortest time, went to Brian Cunha aboard Irie 2, with a time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, 51 seconds.

White Rhino, skippered by Todd Stuart, finished with the best PHRF-NB handicap adjusted time. White Rhino circumnavigated the island in 3 hours, 3 minutes, 25 seconds.

The Eads Johnson Trophy, given to a large boat with the fastest corrected time, went to Paul Zabetakis aboard Impetuous. The Robert A. MacLeod Rear Commodore Trophy, given to the daysailer with the fastest corrected time, went to Nicholas Sertl aboard Lucy. Just last month Sertyl won the youth national title in the doublehanded Club 420 division.
