The state Traffic Commission on March 13 unanimously approved the increased speed limit from 40 mph to 50 mph. Jamestown Police Chief Ed Mello sits on the commission. He says he had no objections to the change.

According to Rosamaria Amoros, spokeswoman for the state Department of Traffic, work got underway to requisition, manufacture and install the signage following the vote. The new signs were erected about two weeks ago.

“Given it is a divided highway, the commission found that the roadway can safely handle vehicles at this speed,” said Amoros. “Both the state police and the town of Jamestown provided input prior to the vote.”

The speed limit on the Jamestown Bridge is 45 mph, and the limit on the Newport Bridge is 40. The new 50 mph is in effect between the two spans except 1,000 feet north of the toll plaza in both directions.
