Auditions for ‘Nutcracker’ this weekend

Island Moving Co. will hold auditions for children’s roles on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the troupe’s studio at 3 Charles St. in Newport. Auditions are for its holiday production of “Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff.”

Auditions will be at 1 p.m. for children ages 8 to 11, and at 3:30 p.m. for children 12 and up. Candidates are asked to arrive a half hour before the audition time.

The “Newport Nutcracker at Rosecliff” is a full-length ballet set in the surroundings of Rosecliff mansion on Bellevue Avenue. The children’s cast works closely with the professional performers. New York Times critic Alastair Macaulay wrote about Miki Ohlsen’s unique vision of the holiday classic in his 2010 “Nutcracker Marathon.” The ballet was also featured on “Good Morning America’s” Christmas broadcast.

Performances run from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6. Auditions will be in the form of a ballet class. All children should have ballet training and be dressed appropriately. There will be an audition fee of $25 in advance, $40 at the door. Candidates are encouraged to preregister at Island Moving Co.’s website. Families are reminded that it is boats weekend in Newport and parking may take longer than usual.
