Laurie O’Connell Fischer
Laurie O’Connell Fischer, 62, of North Providence, passed away on Aug. 26, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Thomas G. and Claire O’Connell of Jamestown.
Laurie grew up in Jamestown, graduated from St. Catherine Academy in Newport and was in the last Jamestown class to ride the ferry to Newport for high school.
She graduated from Rhode Island College and became a beloved teacher for 28 years in Providence at St. Rocco’s School and then at George J. West Elementary. Laurie was inspired to become a teacher because of her all-time favorite, Patty Vandal. She kept Patty’s picture on her desk for her entire career. A highlight for her city students was traveling to Jamestown where they delighted in picnicking at Fort Getty and then enjoying the town playground.
Laurie leaves behind her husband of 38 years, Carl Fischer, son Daniel Fischer and his wife Gio, son Ryan Fischer, and daughter Lindsay Fischer Pettinelli and her husband USMC Capt. John Pettinelli, and grandchildren Colin and Maya Pettinelli, and Abigail Fischer.
Laurie is also survived by her brother Thomas O’Connell and sister Sally O’Connell Pezanko, nephews Andrew, Kevin, Matthew and Eric O’Connell, Timothy and Luke Pezanko, and niece Deborah O’Connell. She was predeceased by her brother Timothy O’Connell.
Laurie requested that any donations in her memory be given to SmileTrain.org.
