Chamber Chatter

By Robert Horne

The mission of the Jamestown Chamber of Commerce is to create an atmosphere of goodwill between the business community and the residents. We work hard to achieve this goal by providing community programs and creating an opportunity to network and exchange ideas.

Your chamber currently represents over 110 local businesses and we are actively looking to increase our membership. By growing our numbers, we can slowly afford more advertising. It will benefit all businesses and the healthy, but controlled, growth of Jamestown as a destination.

Our program activity this year has been exceptionally well received. We started the year with our monthly breakfast series in January, February and March. The events organized by Mike Swistak and hosted at the Narragansett Café featured prominent Jamestown residents as speakers and included U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, U.S. Attorney Peter Neronha and data specialist Jon DiOrio. In April, the chamber presented a business expo at the recreation center that showcased 35 Jamestown business people affiliated with the chamber. It has been followed by our monthly business afterhours events hosted by selected businesses. These events provide a wonderful opportunity for exposure and networking between members and residents.

The biggest event of the year is our annual fundraiser in August. This year’s theme was “Bermuda Bash” and was held at the Fort Getty pavilion and attended by over 280 who enjoyed an evening of dining and dancing. A portion of the proceeds have been donated to a local nonprofit. This year’s recipient is Bridges, a Jamestown social services organization. Thanks to all who donated and worked so hard to make this event a huge success.

The chamber’s annual Christmas party will be held on Dec. 12 at the Bay Voyage. We all welcome Plantation at the Bay as Jamestown’s latest restaurant and wish them the best of luck.

Since becoming president, it has been one of my goals to make the chamber as transparent an organization as possible. Members and the public are welcome to attend our monthly board of directors meeting held the first Thursday of every month. We have upgraded and improved our website and the minutes of all meetings are now published. Please check us out at JamestownRIChamber.com. We are now also on Facebook.

In the near future, we plan on engaging members by asking what more we can do and how we can implement your suggestions. Our PR efforts are ongoing and we take your comments seriously. Thank you, Jamestown, for your support.
