Grants available for outdoor recreation

The state Department of Environmental Management is now accepting applications for openspace recreation acquisition and development grants. A total of $5 million is available under three grant programs. The grants will provide 50 percent of funding to acquire, develop or renovate outdoor recreation facilities.

Among the projects that have received prior funding through the grant programs include Riverpoint Park in West Warwick for tennis courts; Deerfield Park in Smithfield for a multipurpose field; Lime Rock Park in Lincoln for a basketball court; Tucker Field in Cumberland a new field with artificial turf; and Ball O’Brien in New Shoreham for restrooms and picnic shelter.

Applications will be accepted through Nov. 29 and will be reviewed by an eight-member committee. Applications are available at DEM.ri.gov or by calling Joe Dias at 222-2776, ext. 4301.
