Board declines invite to explore unified high school
Following an invitation from the Middletown Town Council to explore the feasibility of a unified regional high school, the School Committee at its Nov. 7 meeting decided it had no interest in becoming one of the founding members.
The School Committee in August passed a resolution in support of the Middletown councilors. However, more recently, Middletown sent an email to town and city councils throughout Newport County asking each to appoint two representatives to an exploratory committee. The email asked area school boards do the same.
According to Chairwoman Cathy Kaiser, while a regional high school may one day be a viable option for students graduating from Lawn School, she doesn’t think the district would benefit in becoming a “core member.” Kaiser cited financial investments and obligations one reason to declining the invitation.
