Marc Mecray was born on June 3, 1966, in Philadelphia, Penn., and died unexpectedly on Nov. 9, 2013, at his home in Lake Oswego, Ore. He is the son of John Mecray and the stepson of Mary Gillette of Jamestown.
Marc graduated from Newport’s Rogers High School in 1984 and went on to earn an associate’s degree in drafting at New England Tech. He was highly proficient with the CAD system.
Marc worked for Newport’s Oldport Marine Services for several seasons and in 1988 he moved to Lake Oswego to join his uncle Jerry Mecray’s Industrial Optical Alignment Company, which was a leader in the paper manufacturing service industry. Upon his uncle’s death in 2000, Marc took over the company and dealt successfully with its many demanding challenges. He was lauded in the industry for his accuracy and precision.
Marc earned a private pilot’s license and was also an excellent photographer. Other interests included computers, scuba diving, motorcycling and sailing.
Marc is survived by his father, John Mecray, his stepmother, Mary Gillette, his sister, Stacia Mecray, his mother, Maryann Nicholson, his niece, Lucy Lutyens, and his nephew, Samuel Lutyens.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Donations in Marc’s name would be gratefully received by the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport.
